Police jobs in Quebec

A police job in Quebec goes through a specific employer: the Sûreté du Québec, a municipal or Indigenous police force, the RCMP, or a specialized force such as UPAC. Here is where to apply, the requirements set by law, and the related occupations that also hire peace officers. This page applies to women and men alike.

The legal requirements

Section 115 of Quebec's Police Act sets four requirements for every police force in the province: being a Canadian citizen, being of good moral character, not having been found guilty of a criminal offence, and holding the patrol diploma of the École nationale de police du Québec. The government and municipalities can add more. The full path is in our article how to become a police officer in Quebec.

Before the school, you need a DEC or an AEC in police technology: see police technology and the École nationale de police. The school takes 9 cohorts of 108 students, or 972 police candidates per school year, and the deadline is May 1 each year.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you apply to become a police officer in Quebec?

Directly with the police force: the Sûreté du Québec recruitment page, each municipal force's website, or the RCMP careers pages. You first need the diploma of the École nationale de police, or to be on track to get it for the Sûreté du Québec.

Do you need a job offer to get into the École nationale de police?

Only if you hold an AEC in police technology. A DEC graduate does not need one. The school states that a job offer gives no priority when places are assigned.

Can you become a police officer without being a Canadian citizen?

Not in Quebec: section 115 of the Police Act requires Canadian citizenship. The RCMP also accepts permanent residents who have lived in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the past five years.
