Full guide: Police jobs in Quebec
To become a police officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), recruitment starts with an online application. You then go through seven selection steps, then take 26 weeks of training in Regina, Saskatchewan. A constable starts at $71,191 a year, according to the scale the RCMP posts as of April 1, 2024. This text applies to women and men police officers alike.
Admission requirements
The RCMP's "Basic requirements" page, modified on August 27, 2026, lists the conditions to meet before applying. Here are the main ones.
- Have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status, with at least 1,095 days lived in Canada in the last five years in the second case
- Be at least 18 years old at the time of applying
- Be proficient in French or English
- Hold a valid, unrestricted Canadian driver's licence
- Have a high school diploma issued in Canada or the equivalent
- Hold a valid standard first aid certificate, with level C CPR
- Meet the medical, psychological, vision, hearing and physical fitness standards
You do not need to be bilingual. The RCMP sets no age limit, but you must be at least 19 to be hired as a police officer.
The recruitment steps
The "Processus de recrutement des policiers et policières" page, modified on September 25, 2026, describes seven steps.
- The online application, in the Government of Canada's GC Jobs portal
- The career presentation and the online entrance assessment, which measures cognitive abilities
- The police physical fitness test, field version, and the qualities assessment interview
- Sending forms and documents through the Security Screening Portal
- The eligibility interview
- The medical assessment and the psychological suitability assessment
- The background investigation and the security assessment
The field version of the physical fitness test is a new requirement. It applies to people who apply on or after September 15, 2026. A candidate who is not retained at pre-screening waits 3 months before applying again.
Cadet training at Depot Division
The Cadet Training Program lasts 26 weeks, or six months full time. It is given at the RCMP Academy, Depot Division, in Regina. The training is offered in both official languages. The cadet lives on site, in a dormitory, in a troop of 32 members.
The RCMP pays the cadet a recruitment allowance of $1,000 a week. The maximum is $26,000 for the 26 weeks. The RCMP also pays for room, meals, uniforms and transportation to Regina, then to the first posting.
This allowance must be repaid in two cases. A cadet whose training contract is terminated for failing to respect RCMP values, or who leaves the RCMP during the two-year probation period, must repay all the amounts received.
A cadet who succeeds may receive a job offer. They then obtain peace officer status and continue with the six-month Field Coaching Program, at the rank of constable.
A constable's salary
The RCMP's "Salaire et avantages sociaux" page, modified on August 20, 2026, gives the annual pay scale for constables as of April 1, 2024.
| Step | Annual pay as of April 1, 2024 |

| Step 1 | $71,191 |
| Step 2 | $92,497 |
| Step 3 | $100,356 |

The constable is hired at step 1 after training. They normally reach step 5 after 36 months of service.
Mobility: a posting anywhere in Canada
The RCMP is a national organization. Its requirements page writes that the candidate and their family must agree to move anywhere in Canada. Postings follow operational needs. A candidate from Quebec therefore has no guarantee of working in Quebec.
The RCMP's role in Quebec
In Quebec, the RCMP is a federal police force. It provides contract policing services in eight provinces and three territories, and its Contract Policing page specifies that Ontario and Quebec have their own provincial police service. In Quebec, that service is the Sûreté du Québec (Quebec's provincial police).
RCMP Federal Policing works in every province. Its areas include national security, organized crime, cybercrime and border integrity.
Section 20 of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Act allows the federal minister to enter into arrangements with a province or municipality for the use of the Force. Under section 11.1, the commissioner may designate a member as a peace officer.
